Fincantieri’s FREMM Wins US Navy FFG(X) Frigate Competition
Fincantieri was awarded a $795 mil US Navy contract for detail design & construction of the first ship at its Marinette shipyard in Wisconsin. Options for up to 10 ships could make the contract worth up to $5.6 billion. Fincantieri was competing with a frigate design based on the Italian Navy's FREMM frigate.

HHI Launches Fourth Daegu-class FFX Batch II frigate for ROK Navy
South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) launched ROKS Donghae (FFG-822), the fourth Daegu-class FFX Batch II frigate for the Republic of Korea Navy (ROK Navy). The event took place on April 29 at the HHI shipyard in Ulsan.

French Navy SSN ‘Suffren’ Performs Static Dive Test as Part of Initial Sea Trials
The French Navy (Marine Nationale)'s first-in-class nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) "Suffren" successfully completed its static dive test on April 28. The important procedure marks the start of sea trials for the Barracuda program.

USS Zumwalt DDG 1000 Delivered to U.S. Navy After Combat System Activation
USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) was delivered to the U.S. Navy fleet after completing its combat system activation and subsequent at-sea trials, two sources told USNI News.
The destroyer will now count towards the Navy’s battle force ship totals, though operationally the announcement of the delivery doesn’t change much for the ship crew or the fleet. Zumwalt will still continue conducting at-sea developmental and integrated testing, ahead of next year’s planned initial operational test and evaluation (IOT&E) and declaration of initial operational capability (IOC).
HII Delivers 68th Arleigh Burke-class Destroyer to U.S. Navy
The U.S. Navy accepted delivery of the guided missile destroyer Delbert D. Black (DDG 119) from Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls shipbuilding division, Apr. 24.

The DDG 51 class ships currently being constructed are Aegis Baseline 9 Integrated Air and Missile Defense destroyers with increased computing power and radar upgrades that improve detection and reaction capabilities against modern air warfare and Ballistic Missile Defense threats.

Taiwan Starts Construction on 3rd & 4th Mine Laying Ship
A keel laying ceremony was held on April 17 at Taiwanese shipbuilder Lungteh Shipbuilding for the 3rd and 4th Min Jiang-class mine laying ships. The vessels are being built for the Republic of China (ROC) Navy.

Ex-RAN Adelaide-class frigates commissioned with the Chilean Navy
Australia officially transferred former Adelaide-class frigates Melbourne (FFG 05) and Newcastle (FFG 06) to the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile). A commissioning ceremony took place on April 15, 2020 at the HMAS Watson naval base in Sydney.

China Launches 2nd Type 075 LHD for the PLAN
China's second amphibious assault ship, a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) known as Type 075, was launched in Shanghai today by Hudong Zhonghua shipyard. The vessel is intended for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN or Chinese Navy).
Pictures shared by local ship spotters on Sina Weibo (a Chinese social media platform) this morning show the construction dock where the second Type 075 was assembled being flooded. Other pictures show the vessel being towed by tug boats next to the first amphibious vessel. This is where the shipyard will continue outfitting work over the next few months.
According to local media, tomorrow will mark the 71st anniversary of the founding of the PLAN.

One Third of Charles de Gaulle CSG’ Sailors Test Positive for COVID-19
Tests carried out at the beginning of the week revealed that 668 French sailors (nearly one third of aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle crew) have tested positive to COVID-19. 31 service members are hospitalized and one is in intensive care. 30% of the test results are still pending.

On the evening of April 14, 1,767 sailors from the Carrier Strike Group were tested. The vast majority of these tests at this stage concern sailors from the aircraft carrier. 30% of these tests have not yet delivered their results. 668 were positive. Among them, 31 are hospitalized today at the Sainte-Anne army training hospital in Toulon, including one in intensive care. This test campaign is still ongoing.

French Carrier Charles de Gaulle Heading Home Amid Suspicion of Covid-19
The French Navy (Marine Nationale) aircraft carrier and flag ship Charles de Gaulle is heading home early following suspicion of several Covid-19 cases among its crew members. The French Navy decided to anticipate the return of the aircraft carrier to Toulon, originally scheduled for April 23. As of today, a screening team with test equipment will be dispatched to the aircraft carrier
to investigate the cases and prevent the spread of the virus on board the ship.

French Navy Starts Testing L22 Next Gen Data Link Aboard FREMM Normandie
The French Navy (Marine Nationale) started tests of the Link 22 (L22) secure digital radio data link. The tests were recently conducted in the North Atlantic by FREMM Frigate "Normandie" with the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal Netherlands Navy.

First S2150 Sonar Fitted Aboard Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate HMS Portland
HMS Portland becomes the first ship to be fitted with Ultra’s next generation Hull Mounted Sonar Type 2150 as part of a wider refit to the Royal Navy’s frigates.
The sonar has been designed by Ultra Electronics Command & Sonar Systems and will replace the legacy Sonar Type 2050, which has been in Royal Navy service since the 1990s. The new sonar incorporates a state of the art User Interface to improve operator effectiveness and usability. The digital control of the outboard array minimises interference, reduces ships cabling, maximises reliability and extends array maintenance intervals to at least 5 years. The sonar will be fitted to eight of the Royal Navy Type 23 frigates. Ultra has also been awarded the contract to supply this sonar to the first three Royal Navy Type 26 frigates currently under construction.

Japan’s Type 12 SSM Deployed to Keep Watch On Miyako Strait
Japan continues to reinforce its Southern Islands. A new Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile (12式地対艦誘導弾) unit has recently been deployed at the garrison on Miyakojima island.
The Miyako Strait is about 135 nautical miles wide. The Type 12 deployed in Miyakojima have a range of around 108 nautical miles. A version with double range is under consideration.
