Tomahawk Cruise Missiles to Pursue Moving Targets with New ESM Seeker

A new seeker employing Electronic Support Measures (ESM) was recently tested with the Raytheon Tomahawk Block IV cruise missile, as part of the weapon’s product improvement program. The new seeker will enable the cruise missile to engage moving or relocatable targets, including ships or mobile surface-to-air missile sites, identified by their unique electromagnetic signature. The new seeker can automatically locate and track moving and stationary targets by sensing the electro-magnetic radiation they emit (i.e. radar, communications etc). A major enhancement previously introduced with the Tomahawk Block IV missile includes a two-way satellite data-link that enables a strike controller to redirect the missile in-flight to preprogrammed alternate targets or more critical targets.

Tyndall achieves 25,000th sortie

transparent.gif

10/8/2013 - TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla., -- Less than two weeks after the F-22's 10-year anniversary of arriving here, Team Tyndall achieved their 25,000th F-22 sortie during a 43rd Fighter Squadron Basic Course training mission Oct. 7.

"Flying 25,000 sorties is much more than just the number of times that the aircraft have flown here at Tyndall," said Master Sgt. Jamie Leach, 43rd Aircraft Maintenance Unit lead production superintendent.

"This number marks the accomplishment of producing many students to move on into combat coded units, which in turn provides the top cover to the men and women on the ground fighting the war."

Innovation advances F-22 as strategic force in the Pacific

10/10/2013 - JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska  -- The newest strategy in fighter employment will enable combat-ready F-22's to rapidly refuel, rearm, and redeploy. The new concept was demonstrated here during joint exercises in August.

The usual method of deploying fighters is structured around large footprint packages to a select few operating bases. The new rapid response force concept was developed by Lt. Col. Kevin Sutterfield, a Reserve F-22 pilot assigned to the 477th Fighter Group.

"This concept emphasizes the fundamental tenants of airpower: speed, flexibility, and surprise by pairing smaller formations of fighters and airlift that can move quickly together and operate from unexpected locations," said Sutterfield.

B-2 stealth bombers upgrade to include a more direct way to get Presidential orders

Imagine a B-2 waiting orders from the White House whether to drop a nuclear bomb on a enermy site or call it off in Iran, North Korea, Syria. That order has to be delivered to the bomber in a timely and trustworthy way.

With the Common Very Low Frequency Receiver Increment 1, or CVR-1 program, the U.S. Air Force fleet of B-2 stealth bombers will be given another more reliable way to receive orders from the President of the U.S. via EAMs (Emergency Action Messages).

The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the success of recent tests conducted with a fixed wing variant of the Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System (APKWS) laser-guided rocket. The tests were performed by the Direct & Time Sensitive Strike Weapons Program Office (PMA-242), demonstrating robust design of the and the completion of the Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) with the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy, and U.S. Marine Corps. The conclusion of the JCTD is the next step toward evaluating the addition the Fixed Wing variant to the current APKWS Program of Record.

Air traffic control experts at the Northrop Grumman Corp. Electronic Systems segment in Woodland Hills, Calif., is joining the Honeywell Inc. Aerospace sector in Clearwater, Fla., on a project to upgrade precision landing systems aboard U.S. Navy aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships.

Officials of the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) at Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Md., have announced their intention to award five-year contracts to Northrop Grumman and Honeywell to upgrade and improve Navy Precision Approach Landing Systems (PALS) on carriers and big-deck amphibs.

The contracts to Northrop Grumman and Honeywell have yet to be negotiated, and should be awarded in February, Navy officials say. The contracts, which will be basic ordering agreement (BOA), will be for services and materials to fabricate, modify, repair, replace, upgrade, and improve PALS components, assemblies, and associated hardware.
