Rolls-Royce snubs UK over new site

Rolls-Royce expands global capability

20 November 2007

Rolls-Royce today announced plans to invest in two new aero engine facilities in Singapore and in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. The Company had previously announced that it was considering possible locations in Asia and the US.

Over the last decade, Rolls-Royce has established a strong position in global markets. In the light of this success, the Company is investing in new capability in order to meet the increasing needs of its global business and its growing customer base around the world.

The decision to locate the new facilities in the US and Singapore has been driven by three strategic considerations: the attractions of locating major facilities close to customers in two of the largest and fastest growing aerospace markets in the world; the business continuity benefits that will arise from locating the assembly and test of Trent engines on two continents; and a reduction in the Company’s exposure to the dollar.

Sir John Rose, Rolls-Royce Chief Executive, commented: “These latest investments in world-class facilities are further evidence of our success in aerospace markets and the continuing trend towards the globalization of our operations. They also build on our existing international presence and relationships and will bring us closer to key customers in Asia and the US.”

Rolls-Royce has become a global company, with 45 per cent of its Research and Technology, 40 per cent of its employees and 50 per cent of new programmes, already located outside the United Kingdom. At the same time, the Company has maintained its commitment to the UK and over the last five years, has invested £837 million in UK capital projects, which accounts for 80 per cent of its worldwide capital investment over this period.

The total investment in these two new facilities, which amounts to £150 million over the next five years, will comprise two elements:

Singapore

In the light of the Company’s success in the modern wide-body aircraft market and the need to develop increased capacity, Rolls-Royce will build a new facility in Singapore to assemble and test large civil engines, starting with the Trent 1000 for the Boeing 787 and the Trent XWB for the Airbus A350 XWB. Together with its existing UK facility in Derby, this will provide the Company with a dual sourcing capability for the assembly and test of large civil engines, including future new versions of the Trent engine.

The Company’s Derby facility is planned to remain the centre of expertise for large civil engines, with the capability to design and develop these engines. It will also continue to assemble and test the Company’s portfolio of large civil engines.

The new facility will be located in an Aerospace Park at Seletar in the north of Singapore and will be fully operational by the end of 2009. It will employ up to 330 people depending on customer demand and will receive support from the Singapore Economic Development Board.

The establishment of this modern “factory of the future” represents an important step forward in the development of the Trent programme and in the Company’s wider relationship with Singapore.

Commonwealth of Virginia

The new facility in the Commonwealth of Virginia will assemble and test the RB282, the engine selected in June by Dassault to power its new super midsize corporate jet and potentially the first in a family of small engines for the corporate and regional jet market. More than 90 per cent of corporate aircraft are manufactured in the US, which is today the most significant market for these products.

The development and production proving programmes for the RB282 will be undertaken in the UK at recently completed facilities in Bristol.

The new facility in the Commonwealth of Virginia will also have the capability to undertake blisk manufacture for the F136 engine for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). It will also provide the Company with options for future advanced manufacturing activities as opportunities arise.

The new facility will be located at Prince George County, Virginia and will be fully operational by the end of 2009. The Commonwealth of Virginia and Prince George County will provide economic incentives to support the project. This investment builds on the Group’s strong presence in North America and over time is expected to create around 500 jobs in the Commonwealth of Virginia, assuming the F136 programme proceeds to volume production.

LAN Airlines places $2.4bn order for Rolls-Royce Trent 1000

21 November 2007

One of Latin America’s premier carriers, LAN Airlines S.A, has selected the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 to power a new fleet of up to 41 Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The order, which is the first LAN has placed with Rolls-Royce, covers engines for 26 firm and 15 option aircraft with deliveries commencing in 2012.

In addition, the engines will be supported under a long-term TotalCare® service agreement. The potential value of the engine order and service contract to Rolls-Royce is over $2.4 billion at catalogue prices.

Enrique Cueto, Chief Executive Officer of LAN, said: “Our evaluation proved the Trent solution was ideal for our network. Trent family heritage, combined with sensible introduction of technology, provides LAN the low-risk solution we need to ensure we meet our operational requirements. The services package offered under TotalCare will give us tailored and comprehensive engine support, underpinned by Rolls-Royce’s experience and expertise.”

Mark King, President - Civil Aerospace, at Rolls-Royce commented: “We are delighted to welcome LAN as a new customer to the growing list of Trent operators and to be in a position to help them achieve their plans for international growth.”

The Trent 1000 is the launch engine for all versions of the 787 Dreamliner, which enters service in 2008. The engine has, like all Trents before, achieved on-time certification from the airworthiness authorities for all variants of the 787 and continues to set the pace on the 787 programme - first engine to run and first engine to be certified.

Including business yet to be announced, orders have been placed for over 600 Trent 1000 engines by 19 operators and five leasing companies – approximately half the Boeing 787 customers who have made an engine decision. For more information about the Trent 1000, visit www.rolls-royce.com/trent1000

Rolls anxious to axe 2,300 jobs despite soaring order books

Angela Jameson, Industrial Correspondent

Rolls-Royce, the aero engine manufacturer, is to make its first job cuts since the 9/11 attacks on America, despite booking a record number of orders last year.

The company said that 2,300 support and overhead positions will go in the first significant sign that the weak dollar is starting to hurt manufacturers’ competitiveness and in the face of rising raw material costs.

Rolls, which employs 23,000 people in the UK and 39,000 worldwide, said it was looking to reduce managerial, professional and clerical staff by up to 10 per cent. However, it insisted it would continue to hire 200 apprentices and 200 graduates a year to keep on top of a record £35 billion order book.

The jobs will go in the UK, US, Germany and Scandinavia but the company refused to say how many in each territory.

Voluntary redundancies will be sought in the UK but Unite, the main trade union at Rolls, said that the cuts were disappointing given the healthy order book. Bernie Hamilton, Unite’s national officer, said: “We understand the competitive nature of the aerospace sector and the disproportionate effect that the weakened dollar against the pound is having on the industry.”

Rolls has been trying to improve productivity in the past two years and insisted its action was not a response to external factors but part of a continuing programme to make it as competitive as possible.

Mike Terrett, the chief operating officer, said: “We are determined to create a leaner and more agile structure, better suited to the global markets in which we operate.”

Like other British companies that carry out a large part of their business in dollars, it has been affected as sterling rose to a 26-year high last year. Every 2 per cent increase in sterling against the dollar costs the company £12 million. Added to this, the cost of raw materials such as cobalt, nickel and titanium are at historically high levels.

The redundancies will have no impact on 2007’s financial performance, Rolls said, and the costs associated with the scheme in 2008 would be largely balanced by savings throughout the year.

Rolls’s order intake ballooned in 2007 by about £25 billion and analysts at Numis said that the company has a £45 billion backlog of work. The engine maker earns most of its money from servicing and repairing its engines, rather than the initial sale. Consequently, a strong order book leads to many years of lucrative service revenues.

The company had about £600 million of cash at the end of 2007, even after paying £500 million into its pension fund. In November, it announced plans to invest in facilities in Singapore and the US, partly to reduce its exposure to dollar fluctuations.

to hire = embaucher
